MacBook AIR
January 2008: The thinnest notebook on the planet, it's just 4mm to 19.4mm thick and weighs only 1.36kg.
It's lighter and thinner than anything else and it's still a Mac. There's a drop-down door that gives you the basic ports you need (USB, micro-DVI, headphone), but at heart this machine is wireless, including 802.11n WiFi and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR. USB-based ethernet and SuperDrive are available.
The oversized trackpad responds to gestures, similar to the iPod touch and iPhone. Pinch, zoom and more. The 13.3" display is LED-based for instant brightness and greater power efficiency. Display adapters to DVI and VGA are included, as is 2GB RAM.
Storage is provided by an 80GB 1.8" regular hard drive (like an iPod classic) or a solid-state 64GB drive with no moving parts. Power is through a new, tiny MagSafe adapter and an iSight camera is built-in above the screen.
What separates the MacBook Air from the MacBook and MacBook Pro? To achieve this level of portability, you sacrifice a number of ports and some speed. FireWire is absent, so you'll need a companion desktop Mac to work with digital video. Also, the battery is not (easily) replaceable, so you won't be able to swap it on the go. If weight is a key factor, however, the MacBook Air wins easily.
