February 2008: Now with faster processors and multi-touch trackpads. The MacBook comes with a 2.1 or 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, built-in iSight camera, Front Row, Bluetooth, Airport Extreme Wi-Fi and a glossy 13.3" widescreen display.
Starting the Apple Intel laptop family, MacBooks let Mac users on a budget go mobile — in white and black. Through integrated Intel X3100 graphics, up to 1920x1080 screen-spanning output is supported via DVI, VGA and S-Video output through the mini-DVI port with optional adapters.
If you've ever tripped over a laptop power cord, you'll appreciate the MagSafe magnetically coupled power connector — as seen first in the MacBook Pro. It disconnects easily, saving the laptop from a fall.
Also: analog/digital audio input and output, an 8x SuperDrive or combo drive, USB, Gigabit ethernet and FireWire 400. Current versions of iLife and Mac OS X are included, plus a trial version of iWork.
What separates the MacBook from the MacBook Pro? Besides the obvious screen size difference, the MacBook features an Intel X3100 integrated graphics card. While this card is fine for most uses including HD video playback, advanced applications like Final Cut Studio, modern 3D games, and virtual worlds like Second Life perform better with — or require — the dedicated Nvidia graphics in the MacBook Pro. The MacBook also lacks an ExpressCard/34 slot for expansion.
